The most characteristic feature of the Ponytail Palm, otherwise known as the ‘Elephant’s Foot’, is the pronounced base of the trunk. The trunk serves as a water reservoir against dry spells, allowing the tree to go up to 4 weeks without water. Excellent in low or higher lighting conditions, but truly thrives in bright filtered light.

The Senecio peregrinus "String of Dolphins" is a hybrid of Senecio rowleyanus "String of Pearls" and Senecio articulatus "Candle Plant". Like the "String of Pearls", its stems spread out across the ground, putting down roots where they touch, but are most likely seen cascading out of a hanging basket inside homes. The long vines are lined with small dolphin-shaped leaves, and clusters of tiny white flowers that smell like cinnamon usually bloom between October and December. "String of Dolphins" are a relatively fast growing plant if care for properly, and can be easily propagated to grow a full cascade by regularly pruning the stems and replanting the cuttings. It is characterized by its thick, shiny, oval-shaped, lush green leaves that taper to a point giving it a feather-like appearance and is popular for its whimsical form juxtaposed with its striking, shiny, deep green leaves that grow upwards on long stalks. The Sansevieria Laurentii, more commonly known as “Snake Plant” is an evergreen perennial plant native to Southeast Asia, particularly to Sri Lanka and India. Characterized by the tall, yellow stripes that line its bright green leaves and creamy, wave-like stripes that dapple across the surface of its stiff, upright, and sword-like succulent leaves, the “Snake Plant” is a favorable choice for modern and contemporary interior designs. It is a hardy and low maintenance plant that remains very popular because of its adaptability to a wide range of growing conditions. Areas with medium to bright light is best, and although it can survive in low light locations, it will grow much slower and the leaves will become a darker green in color. Some notable benefits of the “Snake Plant” are that they have the ability to purify the air of volatile organic pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, and toluene, and while other plants release carbon dioxide at night, the “Snake Plant” continues to produce oxygen, making it an excellent plant to place in the bedroom.

The Hedera helix, more commonly known as “Common Ivy” or “English Ivy”, is an evergreen climbing plant native to Europe and Western Asia. Often grown outdoors as an ornamental ground-cover, the “English Ivy” is a very versatile plant that can be grown indoors as well. Preferred to be kept slightly on the drier side, the top of the soil should be dry to the touch before watering. Overwatering will cause leaves to turn brown and become dry on the edges, but underwatering also poses problems causing the plant to become stressed, which in turn can make it more susceptible to disease or insect infestations. Ivies can tolerate low to bright indirect light, but lower light levels will slow growth, and the variegated leaves will become less pronounced becoming more uniformly green. Thriving best in cooler temperatures, placing the “English Ivy” in a cool location with air movement is ideal. Results from a clean air study performed by NASA show that the “English Ivy” has the ability to remove volatile organic pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, and toluene. Keep the air in your home clean by adding this wonderful trailing plant to your collection.
